SEO, AEO & GEO FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

What are GEO and AEO?

Helping your business be understood in Google, AI search and answer engines.

Search is changing. People still use Google, but they are also asking questions directly in tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI-powered search results.

That means website visibility is no longer only about appearing in a traditional list of search results. Your business also needs to be clear, credible and well structured enough for search and AI systems to understand what you do, who you help and why your information may be useful.

This is where AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation — and GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation — come in.

They build on many of the same foundations as good SEO rather than replacing it.

What is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, is the process of improving your website and wider online presence so that generative AI systems can more easily understand your business, expertise, services and relevance.

The aim is to strengthen the signals available when AI systems generate answers to relevant questions. That can include tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI-powered search experiences.

GEO is not about inserting special wording into a website or pressing a switch that makes AI recommend your business.

It is about creating stronger signals around clarity, relevance, expertise, trust and evidence.

What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimisation, or AEO, focuses on making information easier for search and answer systems to understand and surface as a useful response to a question.

That often means answering genuine customer questions clearly, structuring information logically, making expertise and evidence easy to identify and connecting related topics across the website.

Clear answers

Answer important customer questions directly and in useful language.

Logical structure

Use clear headings, page sections and internal links so information is easy to interpret.

Useful supporting content

Create guides, FAQs, case studies and service information around real audience needs.

Evidence and expertise

Make qualifications, experience, examples, sources and first-hand knowledge easy to identify.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

There is a lot of overlap, and the terminology is still evolving.

SEO helps search engines understand your website and improves your ability to appear for relevant searches.

AEO helps your content provide clear, useful answers to the questions your audience is asking.

GEO helps generative AI systems build a clearer picture of your business, expertise, services and relevance.

In practice, these should work together.

SEO still matters

GEO does not replace SEO.

AI-powered search systems still depend on information they can discover, interpret and evaluate across the web. A technically poor website with unclear services, weak content and little evidence of expertise is unlikely to be helped simply by adding a few AI-focused phrases.

That is why I treat SEO, AEO and GEO as connected parts of a wider website-growth strategy.

The foundations are often the same: be clear, be useful, be credible and be easy to understand.

What does GEO look like on a small-business website?

For a small business, GEO is usually less about complex technology and more about making the business easier to understand.

Clear service pages

Explain what the service is, who it is for, what problem it solves, where it is available and why someone should trust you to provide it.

Stronger expertise signals

Use qualifications, professional experience, accreditations, case studies, testimonials, named experts and examples of work.

Useful supporting content

Build guides, comparisons, FAQs, explanatory articles, case studies and practical advice around real customer needs.

Consistent information

Describe your business name, services, locations and areas of expertise consistently across the website and relevant online sources.

Better internal connections

Connect service pages to useful guides, related services, case studies and supporting content instead of leaving pages isolated.

Evidence and first-hand knowledge

Show what you know, where your experience comes from and why your information can be trusted.

What makes content more useful for AI search?

There is no fixed GEO formula, but strong content tends to be clear, specific, factually grounded, useful, easy to navigate, supported by evidence and based on genuine experience where possible.

The objective should not be to write for an AI system instead of a person.

Good GEO should make the website better for people as well as easier for technology to understand.

Does schema markup help with GEO?

Structured data can help search engines understand important information about a website, business, service or article. Where appropriate, I can use structured data alongside the wider content and technical setup.

But schema is not a shortcut to AI visibility. It works best when it supports information that is already clear and credible on the page.

Can you guarantee that ChatGPT or another AI tool will recommend my business?

No.

No responsible provider can guarantee that a business will be cited or recommended by a particular AI platform.

AI-generated answers can change according to the exact question, the information available to the system, the sources it chooses, changes to individual platforms, competitors and the freshness and authority of available information.

What we can do is improve the quality and clarity of the signals those systems have available.

GEO for local businesses

GEO is particularly interesting for local businesses because many customer questions are highly specific: who provides a particular service, who works in a particular area, or which business has relevant experience.

For these questions it helps if your website clearly explains what you do, where you work, who you help, what makes you relevant, what experience you have and what customers say about you.

These are also foundations of good local SEO. Again, GEO and SEO are not separate worlds.

GEO is part of website growth, not a separate trick.

Your website does not exist purely for Google, ChatGPT or any other platform. It needs to work for the people you want to reach.

That means bringing together website design, clear positioning, useful content, SEO, AEO, GEO, trust and credibility, analytics and conversion.

The strongest websites make these things work together. That is the approach behind Next Level Web Growth.
